Mississippi justice was formed by two human rights, criminal justice, prison reformer's and anti death penalty campaigners. The idea behind the project is to highlight what we see as racial, social, educational and social bias. If you are convicted of a crime in the state, then what can you expect? Well, firstly a long sentence, and more so if you are poor and black, secondly the most horrendous prison conditions. Prisons filthy, crumbling, and neglected, food that is simple not adequate or of a high enough nutritional quality to keep bodies healthy. No air conditioning in summer, which makes life unbearable in the mid summer months. Health care is none existent. That is just a start!
So who are we?
Elish Delaproser: Elish has a lot of media contacts, and they have, and continue to support Mississippi Justice. Elish also has gained a lot of respect as a hard working advocate, and human rights activist. Elish also works within the field of juvenile justice, campaigning for fair sentencing for children.
Judie Wilson - Spowart: Judie produces video's to show a visual picture of the message they are pushing to get out. She also has a large network of legal contacts that have been built over a number of years. Judie also has legal qualifications, that aide the work the girls wish to achieve.
It has been a busy few weeks for us. With the Fredrick Bell case reaching a critical point, and also the health of Jamie Scott a real cause for concern.
We have spent the summer building up the name of Mississippi Justice, and due to becoming so well known we do get lots of requests for help and information.
This fall there will be no let up in the workload. We have plans to make this organisation bigger still. Since opening up the Mississippi Justice Facebook page the cause we initially established that launched Mississippi Justice as a fully fledged organisation has also taken off in a big way. People are seeing the name Mississippi Justice, and also the work we are doing, and are seeing us as a genuine fighting force against the MDOC. We are going to arrange a meeting very soon to brainstorm an idea we both have and would like to see come to fruition, that will take Mississippi Justice away from the internet, and onto the streets of Mississippi itself. Of course no big idea ever comes easy, and we are having to look at lots of legislation both in the UK and the USA, to ensure that before we launch our new project publicly, we have covered all legal bases.
