Laura Cowan One of the most notorious domestic violence abuse cases in recent California history

  • I'm a volunteer at the Domestic Violence Child Advocacy Center of Greater Cleveland. I'm a community activist, and a domestic violence advocate and a survivor of domestic violence. I was nominated and won for my community work in domestic violence from the American Red Cross Hero's award.

I survived one of the most notorious domestic violence abuse cases in recent California history. My encounter with the twisted logic of abuse began in 1995 outside a motel room in Riverside. That’s when a spate of bad luck led me into a bizarre, four-year odyssey of polygamy, torture and psychological trauma.
The case, involving 19 victims, made national headlines, even CNN, earning the abuser seven life terms in prison. As outrageous as it was, my story fits a typical pattern.

It’s a story of fear so intense it strips victims of everything but the will to survive. Now a speaker, counselor and forceful advocate for abused women I would like to bring awareness to Domestic Violence.

The LA Times did a multimedia piece on my story. please click on the links below to view it.
The video, multi-media piece and story that the LA Times did on me and my family, are all the links below (there are 3 parts):

Megaupload a mega oops for FBI

Earlier this year the US government seized MegaUpload founder Kim Dotcom's assets after his website was accused of facilitating copyright infringement. The New Zealander's home was raided, his website taken down and he was taken into custody. However, New Zealand courts have ruled that the raid was illegal and search warrants were too vague. RT's Web Producer, Andrew Blake, brings us more on Dotcom's case.

Mexcians blame state neglect for drug violence

More than 50,000 people have been killed after years of drug-related violence in Mexico, causing much despair to communities across the country.

As the government continues its six-year long war on drug cartels, many blame officials for failing to address the root causes of the unrest.

They say the state has neglected generations affected by widespread poverty that helped fuel the violence.

America criminalizing HIV?

Wednesday marked National HIV Testing Day in America. According to the US Centers for Disease Control, nearly 1.2 million Americans are living with the disease and approximately one-out-of-five are unaware they are living with HIV. The purpose of testing day is to help those infected treat the problem at an early stage, but if someone has HIV should they be forced to disclose their status? In 45 of the 50 states, there are HIV specific laws that deal with these types of issues. Catherine Hanssens with the Center for HIV Law and Policy

A Brief History of A Great Soldier

Hannibal of Carthage (247-183 B.C.)

Hannibal is said to be the greatest military leader and strategist of all time. Hannibal was born in 247 B.C., when Carthage, then the maritime power, was beginning to decline. The Carthaginians were descendants of the Phoenicians, who were great Black merchants. They traded with India and the people of the Mediterranean, and the Scilly Isles.
When very young, Hannibal accompanied Hamilclar, his father in a battle with the Romans. Seventeen years later, he succeeded his father and became supreme commander of the peninsula. Hannibal had 80,000 infantry, 12,000 cavalry, and 40 African war elephants. He conquered major portions of Spain and France, and all of Italy, except for Rome.
Hannibal marched his army and war elephants through the Alps to surprise and conquer his enemies. In one battle, the Romans put 80,000 men on the field to defeat Hannibal, led by Scipio. When Scipio attacked with his entire army, Hannibal had so studied the grounds and arranged his men so that they surrounded the Romans. He then turned his armored war elephants loose and trampled them. Behind them, he sent his African swordsmen to complete the slaughter.
In another battle, Rome sent 90,000 men led by Varro and Emilius. With only 50,000 men, knowing he could not win by using his main force, Hannibal placed the weakest part of his army in the center, contrary to the best military rules. With his veterans and cavalry on both wings, the Romans struck them in full center as Hannibal had anticipated. When they were sure of victory by overcoming the center, Hannibal's flank closed in and killed 70,000 men, 80 senators and Emilius.
Hannibal later went on to become a statesman of Carthage, and later took his own life, rather than surrender to Rome.

Free Eric Oliver! Trayvon Martin all over again!

It's Trayvon Martin all over again except this time the victim is in jail for fighting back!
On June 12, a white mob led by Chris Milton came to the home of 18-year-old Eric Oliver and his family and demanded that they send out 16-year-old Mikey Vasquez so they could beat him up. After Eric's wheelchair-bound mother asked them to leave, they attacked young Mikey. Eric jumped up to protect Mikey, his mother and the other children at the home.
In the fight, the white men who came to take the 16-year-old got beat up. After this, one of the white women in the mob yelled "Nigger, you're going to jail!" and called the police.
Now Eric is in jail charged with aggravated battery and being held under $100,000 ransom for defending himself and his family while the white man who led the mob there and attacked the teens is free!
We have to stand against this injustice! Eric has the right to STAND HIS GROUND to protect his family and home!

You can say this: I have become aware through the International People's Democratic Uhuru Movement of the frame up, arrest, and continued incarceration of Eric Anthony Oliver, a young Black Man, in Bronson, Florida. The circumstances of this young man's arrest is outrageous. As you are probably aware Eric was arrested on June 12, 2012 while defending his family and friends from a white mob the encroached on he and his mother's home. This is Trayvon Martin all over again, except the victim survived this time. This mob attacked a 16-year-old young man but nobody from the mob has been arrested. If there was ever a stand your ground case this is it. I agree with the demands of the International People's Democratic Uhuru Movement as follows:
1. All charges against Eric Antony Oliver must be dropped and a public apology made to him for this frame up
2. Reparations must be paid to Eric Anthony Oliver for his unjust arrest and incarceration
3. All officers associated with this arrest must be fired for this frame up
4. An immediate investigation of the Levy county Sheriff's office concerning their treatment of the Black community in Levy County must be held

Adidas "shackle" sneakers ... Stylish slave footwear !

The corruption, deceit and hypocrisy of America knows no bonds. The NYPD stop & frisk over a half million minorities trying to meet ticket and arrest quotas and claim it's to keep those very people safe. They shoot unarmed black men and woman and claim it was in self defense. Now a German sneaker company has put shackles on their sneakers and tried to peddle them to our young to subliminally program them that they are slaves.

Even the black villain in the latest Superman animated movie is wearing shackles on his wrist to teach children that black people will always be slaves and less than their white counterparts. The most shocking part about all this is if anyone points out any of these facts, they are made to believe it is all a figment of their imagination and they are ridiculed and told to forget the past.

We are dealing with the most diabolically deceptive demons this side of the milky way. They want to be able to destroy your mind as well as your children's and they don't want you to complain while they do it. Absolutely incredible, thank God nothing last forever and their time is almost up !

911 CALL DETAILS MOMENTS AFTER KING FOUND IN POOL

Rodney King's fiancee repeatedly implored authorities to hurry in a frantic 911 call, saying she woke to the sounds of a fall and found him at the bottom of his swimming pool.
In audio authorities released Tuesday, Cynthia Kelley tells a dispatcher that she threw a shovel to try to rouse King but he wasn't responding.
"He's not moving," Kelley said, crying throughout the early Sunday call. "I was sleeping, all of a sudden I heard something fall like the table and then I looked over and then I went to find him and he's at the bottom of the swimming pool. He's still there. Please hurry up."
The 5-minute, 15-second phone call ends with the arrival of police officers who pulled King from the pool at the Rialto, Calif., home and began life-saving efforts. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police have said they have found no signs of foul play and continue to investigate King's case as an accidental drowning.
Authorities are awaiting toxicology results and said they'll use them in conjunction with an autopsy performed Monday to determine how King died.
The dispatcher asked Kelley if she was able to get into the pool to get King out, but she said she couldn't. She said she tried to "wake him up," including throwing a shovel into the water, but he wasn't responding.
At one point, Kelley told dispatchers that the man in the pool was King, "the guy that got beat by the police."
Kelley, who was interviewed by police for several hours Sunday, is heard on the audio saying she needs to call King's family.
King became famous after his severe beating by Los Angeles police in 1991 was captured on videotape and broadcast worldwide.
The trial of four officers charged with felony assault in the beating ended after a jury with no black members acquitted three of the officers on state charges; a mistrial was declared for a fourth.
The verdict sparked one of the most costly and deadly race riots in the nation's history - 20 June 2012.

Baton vs camera: Police open hunt for citizen journalists

As the consolidated corporate media machine fails in its function as the fourth estate, citizen journalists and independent press outlets are there to pick up the slack. But this important task is becoming increasingly threatened by the harsh treatment at the hands of the police force. Citizen based media is often targeted by police for reporting unfiltered truths, or they are lumped together with activists/protesters and beaten or arrested. As more and more Americans choose alternative news sources to find out what is really happening in their country, harassing those providing first hand reports muzzles the free flow of information and poses a threat to democracy. Abby Martin explores the subject for RT.

Fracking threatening the well-being of Americans?

The practice of hydraulic fracturing extracts natural gas and other resources from the ground by injecting liquid into the Earth, but could also be quietly posing a risk on the environment and the well-being of people near the drilling sites. President Obama has proposed national guidelines on the technique, but could new regulations help protect American citizens for the harmful side-effects? RT's Kristine Frazao joins us with more.
