Dear Mr Cameron,

Inciting hatred is, as far as I am aware, still a crime in Britain. I haven't seen Channel 4's Benefits Street, but then I don't need to, all I needed to see was the hatred and death threats it incited against people on benefits. As if it isn't bad enough living in the most unequal country in the western world and witnessing your government starving the poor and driving people into penury as Osborne brazenly announces yet more brutal cuts to benefits, now death threats?

Why am I writing to you about this? Because you and your government have a dark hand in all this as Osborne does with this little hate speech - 'Where is the fairness, we ask, for the shift-worker, leaving home in the dark hours of the early morning, who looks up at the closed blinds of their next door neighbour sleeping off a life on benefits?' I wrote at the time that this was incitement to hatred, as is your language about sending a "clear message" to people that the UK was not a "soft touch" for claiming benefits when no such general attitude exists amongst immigrants, but then, as you very well know, repeat a lie often enough and some people will believe it.

Like your racist vans, and what a nasty bit of work they were, they get the message out. It doesn't matter that your racist vans won't be used again, the damage is already done and now we are seeing just how effective these tactics are. All these are tactics the world has witnessed before with the dehumanisation of the Jews in Germany, so reading comments about killing, hanging, setting fire to, shooting, castrating, putting down like dogs, towards people on benefits is a sure sign that we're headed down the same road as Nazi Germany. How long before we see a Kristallnacht in Britain, Mr Cameron? Of course you'll roundly condemn any such action but your culpability is as clear as day for anyone with even half a mind who is paying attention.

Promoting austerity through inciting hatred is as low as it gets and people will not just be dying in droves in their homes, there will be blood on the streets. Michael Meacher warned you of the deaths that are occurring across Britain, but it will not stop at people giving up in despair. When the ignorant and the bigoted can make so many public death threats, the violence will not be far behind and the ugly words and deeds of your government will declare your governments culpability.
