This Is What Unsafe Abortion Looks Like posted by: Robin Marty

One of the many priorities of the Congressional Republicans is the driving desire to stop all forms of abortion, both locally and abroad.  Thanks to numerous legislation pending in states, we are likely to end up with a national landscape that makes abortions much more onerous to obtain, much more expensive, and likely later in term.  But hopefully none of this will lead to the type of desperation seen in other countries.

A report from Kailahun, a small town in Sierra Leone, gives the disturbing details of what teens who do not have access to safe, legal abortions.  A worker with Marie Stopes, a global reproductive health care provider explains the process, which is known locally as "rocket propelled grenade."

The Centre Manager of Marie Stopes in Kailahun, Sister Mary Sheku, has disclosed that abortion is induced by teenagers by inserting a concoction of cassava leaves, cassava stems and ‘other herbs’ into their vagina and leaving it there for two days. This method of abortion she explained is called Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG).
She said many teenagers who have died a painful and horrific deaths in Kailahun due to this method.
Sister Mary Sheku went on to state that since she started working in Kailahun, she has treated six cases of girls who insert the stem into their vagina and uterus and suffer from severe bleeding. She noted that most of the girls who commit the act are between the ages of 13 to 15 but some adults are even involved.
While Republicans are fighting to end the funding of family planning programs in the United States, they are also working to end any sort of global health funding that could involve family planning, leaving more teens and women pregnant, and not giving birth, but attempting to abort via whatever means they can find.
Even if that means a rocket propelled grenade.
