Newark Host Baby Shower for Moms in Need posted by: Ann Bibby
The second annual Newark Community Baby Shower demonstrates that community spirit lives in spite of the recession and politicians who can't see the people connected to the budgets they cut.
The baby shower grew out of Mayor Cory Booker's 2003 initiative Newark Now, a program designed to empower Newark residents by providing them with the tools, skill and means to improve their neighborhoods.
In cooperation with K.I.D.S (Kids in Distressed Situations), an international children's charity program, moms-to-be and new moms in Newark will take part in a year-long initiative to make sure that their babies will have resources necessary for the first years of life. K.I.D.S donated $500,000 of new baby products, like diapers, bottles and strollers.
In addition, the baby shower provides speakers on a wide range of parenting topics and more importantly, instills a sense that someone cares and that the women and children are a vital part of the Newark community.
