HAVANA, Cuba, Sept 28 (acn) The leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, presided over the main public rally to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Committees in Defense of the Revolution (CDRs) on Tuesday morning.
During the event, speaking to thousands of people who gathered in front of the former Presidential Palace and current Museum of the Revolution in Havana, Fidel referred to the historic conditions in which the CDRs were born on September 28, 1960, in that same place.
He commented that, on that occasion, he was returning from New York, where he had addressed the UN General Assembly and where he had the opportunity to meet the main leaders of the former Socialist bloc, including former Soviet President Nikita Khrushchev.
Fidel said that his first speech at the United Nations included the main ideas he had expressed during his defense statement known as "History Will Absolve Me" during the trial he faced after the July 26, 1953, attack on the Moncada garrison.
"It was not a premeditated action, but the response of a Cuban revolutionary to what was happening in the world at that time," the Cuban leader pointed out.
"I mention this to let you know the antecedents and the mood in which I was when I participated in that rally whose 50th anniversary you are commemorating today. It's a privilege for me to meet with you again, fifty years later," Fidel stated after referring to his suggestion on that occasion to create, in response to a campaign of US aggressions, a revolutionary system of vigilance called CDRs.
He added that the warnings he made 50 years ago about the aggressiveness of US imperialism are still valid today and reiterated the need to continue fighting.
The Cuban leader insisted that the only possibility of the human race to survive is to renounce the use of nuclear weapons. In this sense, he added that it is important to know the processes and military doctrines of US imperialism to be able to oppose such irrationality "because they are the only ones threatening the world and all they do leads to war."
In this regard, Fidel referred to the circumstances in which the United States dropped the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, when the Japanese empire was falling down and there was no need to use these weapons.

Unbelievable News
When I was finishing a reflection about the destitution of Colombian Senator Piedad Cordoba, unbelievable reports began to circulate from Ecuador. I've spent hours listening to them. As the minutes go by, the turmoil grows.
At 5:12pm, Cuban time, the condemnation to the coup multiplies. The most prestigious Latin American leaders, like Chavez and Evo, voice their strong denunciations. An assembled OAS is without alternative. Its members get angry and even Chinchilla protests; and Colombia's new president has said he supports Correa.
President Rafael Correa is firm and unwavering. The people are much more organized. The coup, to my judgement, is already lost.
Even Obama and Clinton will have no other choice but to condemn it.
