INQUEST SHOCK AT DEATH DURING DEPORTATION

Responding to the death during restraint by civilian security guards under contract to the Home Office on British Airways Flight 77 to Angola of 46-year old Jimmy Mubenga on 12 October 2010, INQUEST’s Co-Director Deborah Coles said:

INQUEST is deeply shocked and outraged by what was a death waiting to happen and only confirms our worst fears that a death during a deportation was inevitable given the widespread concerns about the well-documented abuses and methods of restraint used on people being forcibly removed from the country.

INQUEST will be working to ensure that the full facts of this case are publicly explored and those responsible are held to account.

Notes to editors:

INQUEST has considerable expertise working around restraint-related deaths in all form of detention and will be working closely with the family and their lawyer.
