Anti-Irish Know-Nothings
The most vicious and widespread anti-immigrant sentiments of the early nineteenth century were directed against the Irish exiles of the potato famine. In this exercise, your students will explore the reaction of nativists to Irish immigration by examining some cartoons and the 1854 platform of the Know-Nothing Party.
The immigrants that received the most hostile reception upon arrival in America during the early nineteenth century were the Irish. You will be exploring this reception in class. To prepare, read this section. Also, take a look at this graphic, and think about what it says about American racial attitudes during this period.
