The Democratic Republic of Congo (Formerly known as Zaire) is estimated to have $24 trillion (equivalent to the combined Gross Domestic Product of Europe and the United States) worth of untapped deposits of raw mineral ores, including the world's largest reserves of cobalt and significant quantities of the world's diamonds, gold, copper and Coltan.
Coltan (short for columbite--tantalite and known industrially as tantalite) is a dull black metallic ore from which the elements niobium and tantalum are extracted.
Tantalum from coltan is used to manufacture tantalum capacitors, used in consumer electronics products such as mobile phones, DVD players, video game systems and computers. Hence the influence of Global Corporations in instigating and funding conflicts.
